Ingredients
Beef Filling
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 teaspoon chili flakes or sriracha (optional)
- ½ cup fresh Thai basil leaves, chopped
For Assembling
- 12 small flour tortillas or rice paper wrappers
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 carrot, finely shredded
- ½ cucumber, thinly sliced
- Extra basil leaves (optional)
Dipping Sauce
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
Instructions
- Sauté Aromatics: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, then sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, releasing their aromatic flavors.
- Cook Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook thoroughly until browned, breaking it up with a spatula. Drain any excess grease from the pan to keep the mixture light and flavorful.
- Season Meat: Stir in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, and chili flakes or sriracha if using. Cook the mixture together for 2 to 3 minutes, allowing all the flavors to meld beautifully.
- Add Basil and Cool: Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the chopped fresh Thai basil leaves. Let the beef mixture cool slightly to make it easier to assemble in the wrappers.
- Prepare Wrappers: Lay out the flour tortillas on a flat surface. If using rice paper wrappers, soften them by briefly dipping in warm water until pliable and ready to roll.
- Assemble Rolls: Place a spoonful of the beef filling onto each tortilla or rice paper wrapper. Add a layer of shredded lettuce, shredded carrot, sliced cucumber, and a few extra basil leaves if desired.
- Roll Them Up: Roll the wrappers tightly like a burrito or traditional spring roll, ensuring the filling is snug inside to hold all the ingredients together securely.
- Make Dipping Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, lime juice, honey, and sesame oil to create a tangy and sweet dipping sauce.
- Serve: Serve the rolled spring rolls immediately with the dipping sauce on the side for dipping and enjoy this fresh and flavorful appetizer.
Notes
- You can substitute ground beef with ground chicken or turkey for a lighter option.
- For a gluten-free version, use rice paper wrappers instead of tortillas and tamari instead of soy sauce.
- Add fresh chili or hot sauce to the dipping sauce for extra heat.
- These rolls are best served fresh as the wrappers can become soggy if stored for too long.
- To make the rolls vegetarian, substitute beef with sautéed mushrooms or tofu and use vegetarian sauces.
