Ingredients
Filling
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Assembly
- 8 egg roll wrappers
- 8 slices American cheese
- 32 dill hamburger pickle chips
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
Frying
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Big Mac sauce, for serving
Instructions
- Cook the filling: In a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion is softened. This ensures the flavors meld and the beef is fully cooked.
- Season and cool: Reduce heat to low, then stir in ketchup, yellow mustard, salt, and pepper to season the mixture. Allow it to cool slightly, making it easier to handle when assembling the egg rolls.
- Prepare wrappers: Lay an egg roll wrapper flat on a clean surface. Place one slice of American cheese in the center followed by 4 dill pickle chips evenly over the cheese, creating the base of the filling.
- Add beef mixture: Spoon about 3 tablespoons of the cooled beef mixture directly on top of the cheese and pickles, layering the savory flavors.
- Seal the egg rolls: In a small bowl, mix water and cornstarch to form a slurry. Use a brush to apply this mixture along the edges of the wrapper. Fold the bottom corner over the filling, fold in the sides to enclose the filling, and roll up tightly to seal completely. Repeat with the remaining wrappers.
- Heat oil: Preheat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large, heavy skillet to 350°F (175°C) to ensure even frying and a crispy exterior.
- Fry the egg rolls: Fry the egg rolls in batches for 5-7 minutes, turning them halfway through cooking. Fry until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides.
- Drain excess oil: Remove the fried egg rolls and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil, keeping them crisp.
- Serve: Serve the Big Mac Egg Rolls hot with Big Mac sauce on the side for dipping, delivering all the flavors of the classic burger in a fun new form.
Notes
- Use fresh egg roll wrappers for best texture and crispiness.
- If you prefer, you can bake the egg rolls at 400°F for 15-20 minutes, turning halfway, for a lower-fat option.
- To make your own Big Mac sauce, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, yellow mustard, relish, garlic powder, onion powder, and vinegar.
- Ensure the filling is not too hot or wet before wrapping to prevent soggy wrappers.
- Serve immediately after frying for best crispiness.
